Crop Shares Vs. Entity Shares

Crop Shares:

  • Definition: An agreement between the farmer and a landlord as a form of rent payment
  • Setup: Managed on the Field and Land Cost page under the Crop Share column
  • Revenue and Expenses: Allows revenue and specific expenses to be split between the farmer and landlord based on a predetermined share percentage
  • Example:
    • Field Size: 100 Acres
    • Yield: 100 bushels/acre
    • Agreement: 25/75 (25% to the Landlord, 75% to the farmer)
    • Total Production: 10,000 bushels (100 bushels/acre x 100 acres)
    • Landlord Revenue: 2,500 bushels (25% of total production)

Entity Shares:

  • Definition: Represents a partnership among farming entities
  • Setup: Managed on the Crop Planner page (enter in the revenue and expenses attributed TO the Landlord)
  • Revenue and Expenses: All applied expenses (seed, chemical, fertilizer, miscellaneous expenses) are split according to the entity share details. Revenue is split based on the acres assigned to a field
  • Example:
    •  Field Size: 100 Acres
    • Yield: 100 bushels/acre
    • Entity Share: 75/25 (75% to Joe, 25% to Joe's uncle Mark)
    • Total Production: 10,000 bushels (100 bushels/acre x 100 acres)
    • Joe's Revenue: 7,500 bushels (75% of total acres x 100 bushels/acre)
      • 75 acres x 100 bushels/acre
    • Mark's Revenue: 2,500 bushels (25% of total acres x 100 bushels/acre)
      • 25 acres x 100 bushels/acre

Key Differences

  1. Setup on different pages
  2. Crop Shares calculate revenue based on percentage of yield, while entity shares is calculated based on acres
    1. Harvest Profit is designed this way to account for the acres covered with equipment and other expenses. If the farming entity runs a planter and tractor over 100 acres, we want those acres to be accounted for because certain overhead expenses could be applied on a per acre basis
  3. You can have multiple entities on an entity share, while on a crop share, you can have only a single landlord(we will add multiple landlords in the future)

FAQ's:

  1. Why is my yield and acres low on a field?
    1. You may have both a Crop Share and Entity Share setup on a field, when you don't have both in reality. If you only have an Entity Share on a field, and maybe pay cash rent, then you should NOT have a Crop Share set on the field.
