Profit Maps Overview

Introduction: Profit Maps let you analyze field-level profitability by combining seeding and harvest data with your financial records. This guide explains the data requirements, how to customize map views, interpret opportunity acres and variability, and export or upload profit maps to John Deere Operation Center.

Steps

  1. Open Profit Maps
    • Go to Reports and click the Profit Maps tab.
    • You’ll see a list of fields where profit maps can be created (requires the correct data layers).
  2. Confirm Required Data
    • Minimum requirement: Seeding layer and Harvest layer to calculate yield.
    • Import these layers into your account from John Deere Operation Center via the Applications and Yields tabs.
    • If you need help importing, contact Support or review Help Docs.
  3. Review Field Metrics
    • Each field displays:
      • Opportunity Acres – acres not generating enough revenue to break even.
      • Yield, Net Profit, Gross Profit, and Variability.
  4. What are Opportunity Acres?
These are the acres of a field that do not generate enough revenue to cover costs. In other words, loss acres. Profit Maps highlight these areas so you can focus on improving yield or reducing expenses.
    What is Variability?
Variability measures the standard deviation of gross profit across a field. High variability means wide swings in profitability and highlights areas for improvement.
  5. Adjust the Profit Map Scale
    • Verify the percentage distribution between map zones looks balanced.
    • If skewed heavily to top or bottom ranges, edit the ranges to fit the year’s data.
    • Options: add/remove steps, change color palettes, or adjust ranges.
  6. Blend and Contour
    • Use Blend and Contour tools to smooth streaks in the data (common with yield maps) and improve visual clarity.
  7. Analyze Profitability
    • View breakdown of profit, production, revenue, expenses, variability, and opportunity acres.
    • See what yield increase or expense reduction is needed to reach break-even on loss acres.
    • Example: On a 13.55-acre loss area, you may need +30.5 bu/acre or –$156 in expenses to break even.
  8. Use Loss Maps
    • Click on maps to generate a Loss Map showing where additional yield is required to break even.
  9. Upload Maps to Operation Center
    • Click Upload Maps to send your profit map directly back to Operation Center for recordkeeping.
  10. Explore Layers & Drawing Tools
    • Click on any imported layer (e.g., strip till application) to see its effect on profitability.
    • Use drawing tools to select areas and analyze profitability or input influence within that zone.
    • Switch between Layer View and Summary View to compare results.
  11. Run Detailed Reports
    • Profit Maps generate detailed reports at both the field and farm level.
    • Compare fields of the same crop across your farm to identify trends and improvement areas.
